Manage Bipolar Naturally 2

Posted on: August 24, 2011

In the previous article I discussed how after significant research into the mode of action and pharmacology behind how mood stabilisers work I began to look for matching supplements that would have the same or similar chemical reaction in the body.

Number 3 Supplement

MAGNESIUM

Why: This is a super important mineral for bipolar- it is structurally related to lithium and it prevents too much calcium from entering the cell and the cell ‘hyperpolarizing'- which in effect means it prevents the neurons from being overstimulated and firing repetitively. This supplement is an absolute MUST. However the type of magnesium is important

There are many different types of magnesium- the top three forms are Magnesium Glycinate, Magnesium Taurate and Magnesium Malate.

I actually have all three and I rotate them through the day.  An increase in magnesium is going to increase bowel motions which is great if you suffer from constipation. Each form has their different benefits. Most find that if they have sleeping problems all 3 forms work well however Magnesium taurate especially.  I would not recommend more than 2 tablets at night however as they can do the opposite and bring you down too much. On the flip side many find that it works wonders to help stop a hypomanic episode. The taurine in Magnesium Taurate has an inhibitory effect on nerve cell stimulation as well as working in the same way fish oil works to stabilise cell membranes. I usually take 1 glycinate 1 maleate twice a day and the taurate at night.  Magnesium in the glycinate form also competes with glutamate and binds to your GABA- receptor sites which are the site anti-anxiety medications bind to.  So Magnesium Glycinate is a very calming magnesium.  If you suffer from sore muscles and/or fibromyalgia symptoms than one malate in the morning and evening provide significant symptom relief.

Looking forward to sharing with you the next lot of supplements that has combatted many of the associated symptoms of bipolar such as anxiety, depression, mania and mood swings.
